Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine

July 16, 1990

Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine

The Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine is one of the most important documents for the Ukrainian people.

On July 16, 1990, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR proclaimed the sovereignty of Ukraine as the supremacy, independence, completeness, and indivisibility of the power of the republic within its territory, independence and equality in foreign relations.

On top of that, the Declaration stipulates that the people of Ukraine are defined as citizens of all nationalities – no discriminatory restrictions on culture, language, or any other humanitarian needs.

State authorities are obliged to ensure the national and cultural revival of the Ukrainian people, the introduction and functioning of the Ukrainian language in all spheres of public life.

The basic provisions of the Declaration become the basis for the Constitution of Ukraine and legislative acts of state importance. The modern constitutional process begins.
