Deadlock of “Perestroika”

At the beginning of the 1990s, “Perestroika” comes to a standstill. Contradictory and unsuccessful steps in the economy and the growing political crisis mark the trend towards the collapse of the USSR.

A conflict begins in Moscow between Mikhail Gorbachev and the newly elected leadership of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. On June 12, 1990, the Verkhovna Rada of the RSFSR, headed by Boris Yeltsin, proclaims the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR, which provided for the priority of Russian laws over allied ones. Similar declarations are soon adopted in other republics.
